Optics and Laser Application

About us

The Wave, Optics, and Laser Application research group is one of the peer groups active in applied physics under the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Syiah Kuala University. This research group is a centre for developing science and technology related to electromagnetic waves, optics, spectroscopy, and laser applications in various health, industry, environment, and education sectors.

The research group actively integrates experimental and theoretical research, including using light and waves in material analysis, precision measurement, and developing optical and communication technologies. Students who are members of this research group are equipped with experimental skills, scientific data analysis, and the ability to design solutions based on optical and laser technology for current and future needs.

Research Focus

The main research focus of this research group includes:

🔬 Optics and Waves

  • Study of refraction, interference, diffraction, and polarisation of light
  • Development of optical instruments such as microscopes, telescopes, and optical fibres
  • Study of non-linear optical effects and quantum optics

💡 Laser Applications

  • Laser-Induced Plasma Spectroscopy (LIBS): analysis of trace elements in coal, metals, and local Acehnese materials
  • Laser techniques for concrete quality analysis, blood group determination, and material degradation monitoring
  • Laser applications in material processing, cutting and welding

🔍 Spectroscopy and Sensors

  • Emission and absorption spectroscopy for material identification
  • Development of time-resolved spectroscopy methods
