RANGKANG FISIKA SERIES 4 : Monthly Seminar of the Department of Physics FMIPA USK Highlights Scientific Study of Giant Sinkhole-like Phenomenon in Central Aceh

Banda Aceh, April 30, 2026 – The Master’s Program in Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Syiah Kuala (FMIPA USK), successfully held its monthly scientific seminar, Rangkang Fisika Series 4, on Wednesday (April 29, 2026). The event was conducted in a hybrid format and attended by students, lecturers, and participants from various academic backgrounds.

The seminar featured Prof. Dr. Nazli Ismail, S.Si., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Department of Physics FMIPA USK, who delivered a presentation titled “Sharing: Giant Hole in Central Aceh (Pondok Balek), Sinkhole???”. The topic addressed a natural phenomenon that has recently drawn public attention in Pondok Balek Village, Ketol District, Central Aceh Regency.

In his presentation, Prof. Nazli Ismail emphasized the importance of scientific analysis in understanding the phenomenon and avoiding misinterpretation within the community. Based on geological studies, the giant hole cannot be classified as a sinkhole, but is more accurately described as the result of gradual land subsidence and slope failure processes.

He further explained that the geological structure of the area is dominated by unconsolidated volcanic materials, which are highly susceptible to erosion and mass movement. Environmental factors such as rainfall intensity and slope conditions also contribute significantly to the formation of a large, ravine-like structure.

This activity reflects the ongoing commitment of the Master’s Program in Physics FMIPA USK to strengthen academic culture, enhance scientific literacy, and promote evidence-based understanding of natural phenomena in society. The interactive discussion session provided participants with the opportunity to engage directly with the speaker and deepen their insights.

As part of the event, e-certificates were provided to participants who attended and fulfilled the participation requirements.
